Amazon Parrots
Amazona sp.
There are some 26 species of Amazon Parrot. Most are green with contrasting markings on the
head and observable on the wings when open.
Parrots nest in tree holes excavated by the birds themselves. Forest clearance removes traditional
nesting sites, as well as the fruit, nuts and seeds that make up their diet.
Species of Amazon Parrot are found throughout much of South and Central
America, and the Caribbean Islands.
Macaws
Ara sp.
Macaws are well adapted to life in the forest. Their stunning colourful plumage
actually helps to conceal them in the bright sunlight of their treetop home.
A strong flier it flies with steady and shallow wing beats which carry it to
communal roosting and feeding sites of fruit and nut bearing trees.
Found throughout tropical South America and Panama, the biggest threat to their
future is the destruction of habitat.
Macaws breed well in zoos and private collections.
