Amazona Zoo Director, Imogen White

From Benjie Cabbell Manners, Director:

“When my family and I took the zoo in hand in 2013, everything we knew about Amazona and its animals came from the outgoing director, Ken Simms, and his zoo keeper Jim Davies.

We have had a fascinating journey. We’ve discovered the vital contribuation small zoos make to animal diversity. We’ve learned about conservation in the wild. And we’ve got to know the animals, the keepers and many others, from builders to chefs, who run the life of the zoo.

The main predators at Amazona are all endangered in the wild. Many others have habitats endangered by man. This zoo plays a small part in maintaining these species, and most importantly in ensuring the welfare of individual animals.

Our main work, as we see it, is to educate. Human attitudes and behaviours will determine the future of the rainforests and of our wild places.

Some visitors will remember the old Cromer Zoo run by Olga Kerr,
the daughter of Coco the Clown. I am glad Amazona keeps up this Cromer tradition. We will always keep Amazona as open and accessible as possible – we are always open to new suggestions!”
