The jaguar (Panthera onca) is the third largest cat in the world after tigers and lions. It is the only living member of the genus panthera native to the Americas.
With a body length of up to 1.85 m (6 ft 1 in) and a weight of up to 96 kg (212 lb), it is the largest cat species in the Americas. They look a lot like Leopards, native to Africa and Asia but its distinctively marked coat is more complex as it features pale yellow to tan coloured fur covered by spots that transition to rosettes with often a dot in the centre.
The jaguar is threatened by habitat loss and for trade with its body parts. The wild population is thought to have declined since the late 1990s and they are now classed as near threatened – IUCN red list status.
Our Jaguar Balam joined the Amazona family in 2022.
